How Andy Found Confidence, Connection, and Community
Andy is an incredibly bright and imaginative young boy. His curiosity and intelligence shine through everything he does, especially when he’s building or creating. Give Andy a box of Lego or craft supplies, and he’ll turn it into something extraordinary! Anything related to outer space captures Andy’s imagination. He dreams of becoming an astronaut one day, perhaps specializing in geology, paleontology, engineering, or mechanics — fields where his sharp mind and problem-solving skills can truly soar.
Andy’s journey hasn’t been easy. Living with Intermittent Explosive Disorder and severe ADHD, he’s faced challenges when it comes to socializing, making friends, and adjusting to changes in routine. He has also struggled with feelings of worthlessness and disappointment when he couldn’t control his emotions around others.

This past summer, Andy participated in Hearts in Action Summer Camp. From the very first day, something was

different. His mom braced herself for a difficult report such as a call or message about how tough the day had been, but that call never came. Instead, she was greeted with smiles and good news: Andy had an amazing day and even made friends!
AdaptAbilities has become a safe haven for Andy — a place where he feels understood, supported, and encouraged to be his authentic self while learning to respect and connect with others. He absolutely loved coming to camp, including the activities, the team, and the friendships he made.
Additionally, Andy was connected with Dorenlee Darling Doodles through AdaptAbilities and matched with a therapeutic dog. The change has been life changing. With his puppy by his side, Andy feels calmer, more confident, and less anxious. With support from AdaptAbilities, Andy feels a true sense of belonging.
