Other Ways to Give

Planned Giving

  • Life Insurance

  • Bequests (Gifts in a Will)

Gifts in a will, also known as a bequest, is one of the most significant and flexible ways to support AdaptAbilities. Bequeaths can include cash, securities, property or even a percentage of your estate. This can provide substantial ongoing support for our programs.

Please let us know if you have chosen to include Alberta AdaptAbilities Association in your will as we would like to ensure that we understand and implement your gift intentions to its fullest extent as well as to thank you for your support.

Benefits of Leaving a Gift in Your Will:

    • A bequest costs nothing now and can reduce the amount of taxes owed by your estate.
    • You may change your will at any time if your circumstances change.
    • Retain control and use of your assets during your lifetime.
    • Receive a donation receipt for use against 100% of your net income in the year of passing and in the preceding year.
    • With recent tax changes, your estate may now also claim tax credits in subsequent years.

Two Main Kinds of Bequests You May Wish to Leave:

    • Specific bequest: you may set aside a specific dollar amount or property. For example real estate or securities.
    • Residual bequest: you may set aside all or a portion of your estate to Alberta AdaptAbilities Association after all debts, taxes, expenses, and gifts to loved ones have been paid.

    Sample Will Wording:

“I direct my trustees to deliver, pay, or transfer $_____________ or ________ % of my residual estate or to donate ____________________ (name of asset)  to Alberta AdaptAbilities Association (Canadian charitable registration number 848903944RR0001). This gift is to be used for such purposes and designs as deemed appropriate by Alberta AdaptAbilities Association.”

  • Gifts of Securities

Gifts of securities allow you to directly transfer funds to AdaptAbilities while being able to take advantage of major tax benefits. This can be done through shares, stocks, bonds or mutual funds. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full market value of the gift of publicly traded securities without being taxed on the capital gains (i.e. “full amount of the capital gain is eligible for the inclusion rate of zero”). Whereas if you chose to sell your securities and donate those proceeds, there will be a tax placed on those capital gains. You can also choose to carry forward your tax credits for up to five years. This is just one of the many ways you can make a difference to provide purposeful support for individuals with disabilities and their families.

To learn more on how to start the process, please contact your financial advisor (or contact Rich Horning, Director of Development, at rich.horning@adaptabilities.ca or 587-952-7058).
