Supporting Families When They Need Us Most

At AdaptAbilities, we understand how challenging unexpected disruptions can be for families, especially when it involves the care and routines of children with unique needs.

When the CUPE 3550 strike began in early January, many families across Edmonton were impacted. With all support staff in Edmonton Public Schools off the job, many children were suddenly at home without their usual structure or support systems. One AdaptAbilities parent, Kristine, shared with us how the strike impacted her family in those months.

Her son, Patrick, could only attend school once a week. In his absence from the classroom when the strike first started, his grandparents helped, caring for him day after day, even as the demands of a busy little boy began to wear on their energy and strength.

Patrick looked forward to attending Weekend Respite with AdaptAbilities each week, but during the strike, our team stepped in, providing additional support during the weekdays. Patrick was able to enjoy our meaningful programs, while his family was able to focus on other life responsibilities.

As an Educational Assistant in a community skills classroom, Kristine was away from her job and the children she supports, which made it a difficult experience for her. Knowing her son had a consistent, supportive place to go each day gave her peace of mind and made it easier for her to stand in solidarity with her union.

“I am beyond grateful that AdaptAbilities was able to take the stress and responsibility off my shoulders, especially for the grandparents,” Kristine said.

At AdaptAbilities, we are honoured to be that light during difficult times as we continue to empower families and people with disabilities to grow, succeed and belong.
