Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM)

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM)!

DEAM is a time to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities in workplaces and communities, while raising awareness about the barriers that can make finding and maintaining meaningful employment more difficult.

For Aidan, employment has become an important part of building independence, confidence and connection within his community. Aidan has been employed with Da Cecot, a local Italian restaurant, for more than a year, where he washes dishes and resets tables.

What started as an opportunity to build workplace skills has grown into something more. Aidan has developed his confidence in a real workplace, built relationships with his coworkers and become a valued part of the restaurant team. He is not simply gaining employment experience. He is contributing to his community and finding a place where he belongs.

creating more inclusive workplaces

Stories like Aidan’s demonstrate why inclusive employment matters. People with disabilities have skills, interests and strengths to contribute, but they may face barriers when trying to enter the workforce. Creating inclusive workplaces means looking beyond assumptions about disability and recognizing what each person can bring to a team.
