How Summer Camp Shapes Lives: Emmerson’s Story
Our registration for Hearts in Action Summer Camp is now open for returning families, so we thought it would be the perfect time to tell you about Emmerson’s camp experience last year!
Emmerson is a lovely young girl who enjoys swimming, baking and making clothing for her dolls. She enjoys helping others, including assisting at a dog shop.
Emmerson’s mom was seeking services that would set her daughter up for success. Emmerson is a social person and enjoys talking to people but has anxiety, especially when trying new things, so a program that she would feel comfortable in was ideal.
Emmerson previously attended different camps, but they were not a fit until she tried out Hearts in Action Summer Camp with AdaptAbilities. She had the opportunity to socialize, engage in activities with others, and connect with both staff and fellow participants, ultimately feeling understood and welcomed. At AdaptAbilities, she enjoyed a profound sense of belonging!
Camp can be fast paced with different activities happening every day, but Emmerson was able to adapt and make the most of her experience! Initially, she was apprehensive about using public transit, but became more confident and comfortable navigating it, as it became the primary means of transportation during field trips.
She initially felt anxious about summer camps, but after attending, her excitement grew. She would eagerly anticipate daily activities and interactions with new friends. At the end of the day, she appeared joyful rather than exhausted. Her mom believes this indicates that Emmerson is not just calm but genuinely happy at camp. Emmerson truly loved her time, and her mom is incredibly grateful!
We are glad Emmerson enjoyed her time last year and hope to see her at camp this summer!
